Ancient Man and His First Civilizations

PRAYER OF NEB-RE

I praise His name
and I praise Him as high
as heaven high is.
And I praise Him as broad
as the earth broad is.
I tell from His power
to anyone who goest upstream
or downstream
Beware of Him.
Tell it to your son and daughter,
and to the great and small
And to all generations that still have to come.
Tell the fish in the water and the birds in the sky
Tell it to them who know Him,
and tell it to them who don't know Him:
   Beware of Him

Thou God, Helper of the meek,
Thou rushest up to the crying voice of the poor;
when I call out to Thee from my oppressions
Thou rushest up to me
to save me;
Thou givest breath to the oppressed
Thou savest the chained
Thou, o God, Lord of Thebes
Thou savest those who are in the underworld
when someone calls Thee,
Thou comest from far

This prayer was created by Neb-Re,
scetch-designer for the God Amun
In the part of the City of the Dead,
called the Place of Truth;
Neb-Re, justified,
son of Pay, scetch-designer in the Place of Truth;
It's been created in name of Amun, Lord of Thebes,
who comest to the callings of the poor.
He directed this prayer to Amun,
for his greatness and His power;
And he humiliated himself for His face
In precense of the entire country
for his son, the scetch-designer Nakht-Amun, justified,
when he was ill and dying
and was in the power of Amun for a sin.
Then it happened that the Lord of the Gods came to him
like the northern wind
and He blew a soft breeze in front of him.
He healed the scetch-maker of Amun, justified,
son of the scetch-maker of Amun in the Place of Truth,
Neb-Re, justified,
and born of the housewife Pa-shed, justified

Though the servant may be sinful again and again,
the Lord will always forgive him.
because the Lord of Thebes can't stay angry for a day.
When He is angry, it will only be for a moment,
and when His moment of anger has passed,
nothing will rest from His anger.
The wind has turned and brings nothing but mercy;
The Sungod blesses us with His soft breeze.
This prayer has been made by the scetch-designer in the Place of Truth,
Neb-Re, justified,
speaks:
O God I will raise this stela in Your name
And i will put this written prayer on it.
Because Thou hast saved my son,
scetch-designer Nakht-Amun,
Thou hast saved him from death!
Thou hast heared me.
That's why I now do what I have promised.
Thou art the Lord for anyone who calls out to Thee,
and Thou delightest Thee in Truth,

O Lord of Thebes!
