and Skin Cancer rates

Israel
Dr. Micha Barhana, director of the Health Ministry's national cancer registry, told the press conference that one in every 34 Israeli men is likely to develop melanoma by the age of 90, as opposed to only one in every 50 Israeli women.

On average, there were 15 new cases of skin cancer for every 100,000 residents among Israel's Jewish population in 2007. However, the rate among men was 19 cases per 100,000 people, while for women it was 13 per 100,000. Higher rates of skin cancer were also found in native Israelis than in immigrants.

In contrast, skin cancer is very rare among Israeli Arabs: Between 2000 and 2007, only six to eight Arabs a year contracted this disease, compared to the almost 1,200 Jews in 2007 alone.

United States
On April 3, Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) and Peter King (R-New York), along with 15 of their House colleagues, sent a letter to the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee seeking $10 million for melanoma research in the Fiscal 2010 Defense Appropriations bill. This request if approved would mark the second year of defense-funded melanoma research.

The letter specifically cited the long-term health consequences of sustained sun exposure to U.S. troops currently stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Representatives Maloney and King wrote: “With more than 150,000 U.S. Army, National Guard, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marine personnel currently stationed in Iraq, where the intensity of sun exposure is great, there is a potential for a long-term risk of melanoma. In addition, as many serious cases arise many years after the worst exposure, it is likely that we will see increased rates among Korean and Vietnam War veterans as well.”

The Maloney-King letter also highlighted the staggering statistics on skin cancer and melanoma in the general population, stating: “According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most prevalent of all types of cancer; we know that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. Malignant melanoma is the most deadly of all skin cancers. Nearly 60,000 Americans will develop melanoma annually and an estimated 8,000 Americans will die each year from melanoma. Melanoma is the sixth most common type of new cancer diagnosis in U.S. men and women. Furthermore, the mortality rate of melanoma for persons ages 16-29 is exceeded only by breast cancer, cervical cancer and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. And deaths from melanoma have increased more than 100 percent in the past 30 years for men ages 55-80.”

Nigeria: Shagari Makes Case for Albinos with Skin Cancer

Mohammed Aminu

13 July 2010

Sokoto — Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, yesterday challenged the Federal Government to initiate policies and programmes that will support albinos who have skin cancer and to prevent many more from being affected.

He also attributed much of the discrimination and neglect suffered by over two million albinos in Nigeria to ignorance on the part of the general public.

Speaking at the 4th national conference on Albinism held in Sokoto yesterday, Shagari stressed the need to engage government and other stakeholders in ways that bring out the required policies that will change the situation and challenges being faced by albinos in the country.

Shagari's call came on a day the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, restated Federal Government's determination to address the challenges faced by albinos in the country, adding that the era when skin cancer is allowed to progress to an advanced state is gone.

Speaking at the Conference, Chukwu noted that the plight of albinos is a major concern and government had resolved to ensure adequate prevention and treatment of all forms of cancer in order not to allow it to progress to an advanced stage. He said it was in response to the plight of albinos that the Presidential Task Force on Albinism was inaugurated and has the responsibility of implementing short and long term strategies of addressing these challenges.
